For Ontario employees

Starting this fall, all Karis districts in Ontario will begin a two-year transition from Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) to Safe Management. NCI certification will still be valid during our transition period.

Why Change?

  1. The Buy Ontario Act, introduced in 2025, requires organizations to choose Canadian vendors over American vendors whenever possible.
  2. The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), which produces the course Nonviolent Crisis Intervention is based in the United States. The Safe Management Group (SMG) is based in Oakville, ON.

Why Partner With The Safe Management Group?

  1. The Safe Management courses have been successfully delivered to Karis teams in Sudbury and Wellington for several years. The curriculum is approved by MCCSS.
  2. As an added benefit, after the initial six-month transition period, this change will save Karis money, allowing more funds to be allocated to important learning initiatives that support Karis priorities.
  3. The time required for Safe Management training is equivalent to the time required for NCI courses. Since both offer a hybrid approach (e-learning + in-class instruction), backfill costs will not change.

Takeaway Actions

  1. When prompted, please register on the LMS for a Safe Management course in your area.
  2. Before attending an in-person course, you will receive instructions to complete the e-learning course that is required before attending the in-person course.
  3. For questions on your district roll out, please contact your Learning & Development Manager.
