September 15, 2022

On Thursday, September 29, 2022, we will host two listening sessions with Indigenous employees and people who use our services for this month’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We have decided to host these sessions the day before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to protect space on September 30 for people to be able to engage in connecting with Indigenous communities and learning more about Truth and Reconciliation.

Recognized on September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process (Source: Canada.ca).

September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day. This is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family, and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters.” The orange shirt symbolises the stripping away of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations (Source: Canada.ca).

I look forward to connecting with Indigenous employees and people who use our services on September 29th, and later to be able to hear stories from across the organization about how people engaged with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.

Sincerely,

Dwayne
Vice President of Operations
