July 16, 2026
Wildfires continue to affect communities across Canada, and we recognize the impact this situation is having on many individuals, families, and communities.
Smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario has affected air quality across many parts of the province, with some areas experiencing high-risk Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) levels. Air quality conditions can change quickly and may vary between communities.
Employees are encouraged to monitor local air quality conditions and take precautions when air quality advisories or warnings are in place. Weather patterns are expected to bring gradual improvement beginning Friday, July 17, 2026 however, conditions may vary by region.
Reducing Exposure to Wildfire Smoke
Employees are encouraged to:
- Limit time outdoors and postpone, reschedule, or adjust outdoor work and activities where possible.
- Keep windows and doors closed when practical and use indoor or air-conditioned spaces when available.
- Wear a well-fitted N95 or equivalent respirator if outdoor work cannot be avoided and you have been fit tested.
- Pay attention to symptoms such as headaches, eye, nose or throat irritation, or coughing.
- Let your supervisor know if you are experiencing symptoms related to poor air quality so appropriate steps can be considered.
- Seek medical attention if you experience more serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, wheezing, or a severe cough.
Leaders are encouraged to review outdoor activities and consider whether work can be postponed, rescheduled, or modified to reduce exposure to wildfire smoke where possible.
