Last week, the birds were chirping outside my window. This week, where I live, it snowed… And the birds were still chirping – to defy the return of winter, I like to think!
Last week was heartbreaking. Early in the week, a person who used the services of Christian Horizons in Sudbury passed away due to COVID-19. Later in the week, two more people passed away with one due to COVID-19. And as we grieve, we’re faced with an increase in cases of COVID-19 across Canada and the new variants seem to be affecting a wider age range of people.
As of yesterday, Christian Horizons has five (5) people using services and eighteen (18) employees who are currently positive for COVID-19 in six (6) Ontario communities and one (1) Saskatchewan community.

I am happy to share that all the teachers at our partner school in Guatemala are recovering from COVID-19, and so far there have been no deaths. It is a good reminder of the privilege we have in Canada − that even as vaccines are rolled out here, others in developing countries will have to wait.
Even though we have vaccines as a new tool in our fight, we must remain diligent in keeping a distance when we can, using masks and PPE, washing our hands, and limiting our time in community as much as we can. As Janet noted on Monday, “there are a few countries in the world that are ahead of us … let’s look to them for a glimpse of hope”.
Stay Safe!
