Each week, I share statistics and a few updates regarding COVID-19 and Christian Horizons. Last week, the statistics were personal when I reported that an employee had succumbed to COVID-19.
Sadly, this week, the statistics are once again personal because they include a person who used the services of Christian Horizons and who passed away early Thursday morning last week. Serene became part of the Christian Horizons family around ten years ago, and her petite stature was juxtaposed with her big voice, hearty laugh, and large personality. She is missed by those who knew her, and we grieve with them.
As of yesterday, Christian Horizons has one (1) person using services and six (6) employees who are currently positive for COVID-19 in five (5) Ontario communities. We have no active cases in Saskatchewan.

This past Monday marked the beginning of a new school year in Guatemala, as we were celebrating Family Day in Ontario and Saskatchewan. As the local public health suggests, children with and without disabilities attended school for the first day wearing masks and face shields. They are happy to be in school, but it is hard for them to remember it is essential to keep the PPE on. Like here, they are looking forward to the end of the pandemic.
In Ontario, we have had some freezing weather (for Ontarians) and lots of snow this week – and it seems more are on the way. In Saskatchewan, we have had (what felt like) off-the-charts cold weather, which has finally snapped, and we are expecting a balmy ‘zero’ degrees on the weekend. I am not a fan of the cold weather, but I know many who are. One employee in Hamilton could not drive to work on Tuesday (due to the snow), so they broke out their winter gear, and cross country skied to work!
Stay safe – and stay warm!
