Canadians came together once again on April 28th and voted for our next Canadian parliament. Congratulations to all Members of Parliament who were successful in their election campaigns and thank you to all Canadians who took the time to vote.
According to Elections Canada, over 67% of all registered voters participated in this election. This was an increase from the previous election, as people tried to show up to vote. But this doesn’t necessarily tell the entire story. It is estimated that there are 30 million people over the age of 18 in Canada, and 7.4 million people voted (that’s less than 25%).
While we don’t know how many people with disabilities voted, Karis Disability Services, as part of its Service Principles and commitments to promote full citizenship for the people using its services, recognizes that people with disabilities are at risk of not benefiting fully from the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. We commit to supporting each person to realize these benefits as fully as possible.
This year, Karis Disability Services also wants to Celebrate Every Journey (which is our annual theme for this year), because the stories of the people we are committed to supporting are important, and we want to listen to, learn from, and share those stories together.
Did you support or journey alongside someone who participated in the federal election and who might like to share their story?
The Quality, Research, and Practice Initiatives (QRPI) department is looking to talk to some people across our communities about their experiences in participating in the election. We would love to have people share their stories with us and to learn from and share those stories.
If you know of someone who would be interested in sharing their story with us, please email, or have them email, quality@karis.org, and a member of our team will reach out to you to talk further.
