The Canadian government is inviting the public to provide feedback on the Canada Disability Benefit, and your valuable input can help shape and improve how this benefit supports Canadians with disabilities.

The Canada Disability Benefit aims to reduce poverty and provide a standard wage for people with disabilities; however, its proposed budget only allows for $200 a month. People with disabilities are more likely to be hungry, homeless, and without access to the things they need to survive. $200 a month is not going to change lives the way that we envisioned the Canada Disability Benefit could.

How to lend your voice

Until September 23, 2024, the Canadian government is welcoming feedback through the commenting system, found at this link. Your thoughts can directly impact the future of the thousands of people with disabilities – people we serve every day at Karis – who desperately need this support.

As an organization with 3,500 employees, we can make a big difference!

Some more information

You may recall that a few months ago we invited the entire Karis Disability Services network to sign a petition asking for the Canada Disability Benefit to uphold its promises to reduce poverty and to takeover provincial and other means of funding.

Some things the petition asked for were:

  • To model the Canada Disability Benefit after COVID emergency funding that was $2,000/month
  • To make it easy for people with disabilities to apply for the Canada Disability Benefit and to get rid of wait times
  • And to protect receivers of the Canada Disability Benefit from government and insurance clawback
